VBTC’s radio service, Radio Vanuatu, is the only medium capable of reaching 100 per cent of the population. Radio Vanuatu therefore plays a crucial role in the lives of all ni-Vanuatu. The Vois Blong Yumi program is working with VBTC to develop and strengthen Radio Vanuatu’s role as the national radio service by contributing to:
- The maintenance of transmission and production equipment to ensure national coverage of the Radio Vanuatu signal
- The further development of radio programs that genuinely serve audience needs
- The effective management and governance of VBTC
ABC International Development is funded by the Australian government’s international development assistance agency, AusAID, to support VBTC with a full-time adviser based in Port Vila, in addition to short term training, advisory, and technical assistance initiatives.
Recent Activity
Radio extends is reach across Vanuatu
The number of Ni-Vanuatu able to receive good quality radio signals is at its highest level in years. A survey of VBTC’s recently restored short wave transmission system has found that its signal strength throughout the country is excellent. This is a huge improvment from 2007, when a survey found that radio coverage through the Vanuatu islands was “poor to non-existent”. No regular tests were conducted prior to 2007. With physical and financial limitations in shipping newspapers and broadcasting television to Vanuatu’s many islands, radio is the only communication medium capable of reaching 100% of the population.
Lights, Camera and… ‘Action’ Learning at VBTC!
The VBTC Leadership Development Program is up and running at the organisation’s headquarters in Port Vila. Board members, senior managers and staff have completed week-long workshops on leadership and management practices, and are now applying their skills and knowledge to a series of real projects in the organization. These Action Learning Projects range from revising the Corporation’s Strategic Plan to refining VBTC’s vision as Vanuatu’s national broadcaster. We’ll report back in December, when participants present their projects to fellow colleagues.
